THIRD YEAR

Design i

09 / 2015 - 12 / 2015

For my first third year design project we were assigned Valley Gardens in Brighton as our site, my focus was upon the strong graffiti culture within Brighton.

When it comes to the art of graffiti, it is no surprise that the most
heavily affected areas are those that have the little or no street lighting, no cctv cameras and are not as frequently used by the public. The secrecy and discretion essential for this art detaches the artist from the observer, forming a barrier between the two, and to some extent conflicts too. If the work covering the walls of our city were to be given ownership and meaning, our opinion of it would also maybe change. If we were told that it was the creation of a highly regarded artist, would we see it differently? It is this relationship between the people responsible for the commonly referred to disfigurement of property, and the public who become the audience that I am interested in.

My response to the site specific time-piece device project was to produce a graffiti instrument that would not only involve the public, but to an extent implicate them as being responsible for the so called ‘graffiti’ it would coat the lamp post in, in this case.
