SECOND YEAR
design
09 / 2013 - 05 / 2014
My proposal for my second year design was an art gallery, with an artist in residence. The proposal has many urban responsibilities due to its programme, site and scale; therefore, the client will not only be the artist in residence, but also the city itself.
The design deals with the close relationship between the
public space of the gallery and the private space of the artist in residence, this is partially addressed in the spatial hier- archy of the gallery. With the permanent collection, freely open to the public, being on the ground floor, the private exhibition of work from the artist in residence situated on the first floor, along with the
accommodation for the given artist, and finally the second floor in the interiors of the roof would be studio, with access to a private garden.
The programme and design of the art gallery follows on from my work in the first term, of which our brief was to create a domestic intervention. My response to this was the abstract wire model that can be seen in the images above. It's design and construction originated from selection of paper maquette models that explored the augmentation of light.
In addition to this we were assigned the Royal Pavilion in Brighton as the subject of our first design task and our technology module, hence the multiple drawings of the building.
